Liam Walsh Commemoration 1997

Liam Walsh joined the IRA in 1954 and became the commanding officer of  south Dublin during the late 1950s.

 He joined Saor Eire in 1968 and was killed on active service  13 October 1970 during a premature explosion, at the rear of McKee army base off  the Blackhorse Avenue in Dublin. His funeral took place on 17 October 1970 and was attended by over 3,000 people. The graveside  oration was given by Gerry Lawless at Mount Jerome cemetery in Harold’s Cross.

Les McDaid a former member of the Republican  movement in south Dublin, spoke at the 1997 commemoration for Walsh in Mount Jerome cemetery. McDaid’s younger brother Jim a former Republican prisoner was shot dead  in Dublin in 1987.

The McDaid brothers were comrades of Vol Tom Smith shot dead in Portlaoise prison in 1975.
