Simon O’Donnell Portlaoise Prisoners’ Union.

Letter to The Irish Press May 24, 1973 from Simon O’Donnell Secretary Portlaoise Prisoners’ Union  and a former member of Saor Eire Action Group.

The Prisoners’ Union was officially formed in January 1973. It included the vast majority of the non-political prisoners then in Portlaoise, and sought to affiliate to the Trade Union movement. Noel Lynch was elected President, with Simon O’Donnell (British  and Irish Communist Organisation)  and Hugo Meenan joint Secretaries. On the outside, in response, a Committee for Prison Reform was formed. Its acting Chairman was John Kearns and it was joined and supported by Mrs Gaj, Tom Bates, Maire Bates, Eamon Dyas, Doc Quinn and many others. The Prisoners’ Union  (click on letter to enlarge)
