Saor Éire Action Group manifesto.

El north de Irlanda a left-wing Spanish overview of the Saor Éire Action Group manifesto published in May 1971.

With this booklet we want to shed some light on what, in terms of Irish history, it is probably the most unusual and controversial left-wing republican organization to emerge from the political and social turmoil of the late 1960s and, the return to open conflict in the northeast of the country.

We will talk here about Saor Éire, an armed group formed in 1967 [not to be confused with the Saor Éire of 1931] with a mixture of youthful radicals, Young Socialists, former IRA Volunteers, and an uneasy mix for many of Trotskyists and nationalist-republicans, of close friends that were eventually seen as bitter rivals.

The aim of the group was to be the ferment of a Marxist revolution in Ireland through an escalating series of armed actions.

What makes Saor Éire’s story so controversial, beyond the political considerations about Trotskyism and its relationship with other currents

(something that will not be dealt with in this booklet) is, in the opinion of some republicans such as the editor of “An Sionnach Fionn”, the mysterious links with the political establishment in Dublin and various Marxist organizations abroad, mainly in Britain.
